Yoga – The science of Wholistic Living

The word “Yoga” is derived from the Sanskrit word Yuj, which means “to attach, join, harness, yoke”. It is the union of emotions, mind, and body. 

The chief aim of practicing yoga is to “unite” the Divine/ spiritual spirit with the human spirit.

Yoga is a union of spiritual, physical, and mental disciplines or practices that originated in ancient India. It is the philosophy and practice of wholistic science, embracing the interconnectedness of life, which unites physical health with emotional tranquillity and mental equilibrium. 

Yogic Perspective of Wholistic Health and Wellbeing 

According to Yoga beliefs, “Health” is defined as a state of harmony between Support Structure, Fluids, and Senses. 

Yoga assists to obtain an optimum amount of balance between the physical and mental components of our body, which in turn results in balanced functioning.

Yoga is a practice that encourages self-awareness while managing the afflictions of the mind. It is a wholistic system where through meditation, breathing exercises, and physical postures, the health and wellness of an individual are rejuvenated. 

Yoga: A Path to Establish Oneness of Mind, Body, and Spirit

Yoga is the process of uniting the person’s consciousness with the Universal Divine Consciousness. To establish this union or oneness, there are four types of Yoga: 

1. The Work Ethics 

This type of Yoga advocates the path of performing the everyday task as a selfless service and not expecting any reward in return.

2. The Knowledge and wisdom 

Knowledge Yoga is practice to enlighten and illuminate the mind with the realities and facts of life. This form of Yoga involves a systematic method to eradicate ignorance from the mind. It is the journey from the darkness to enlightenment.

3. The Devotion 

The Devotion Yoga advocates the path of uniting through worship and rituals with the Supreme Being. It is believed that Devotion Yoga fills the mind with peace, happiness, divine love, and tranquility through a systematic method of self-surrender and devotion.

4. The Control of Mind

To be able to control the mind is the most common form of Yoga. It advocates the method of controlling the mind. It is an eight-fold path that was established by one of the great Yogis.

Aspects of Yoga

Researchers suggest that there are eight aspects of Yoga, known as eight limbs of Yoga. They are:

  • Abstinences focus on non-violence, truthfulness, marital faithfulness, avoiding of jealousy, and extreme desire for wealth 
  • Observances focus on internal and external purity, persistence, and perseverance, determination, accepting circumstances, and understanding thoughts of the real self and of the Supreme Being. 
  • Specific postures focus on relaxing the body and mind by holding any specific position for some time. It has many physical and mental health benefits.  
  • Breathing Practices give you a control over your breathing and calms your body and mind. Through these practices you can actually detach your soul for a second to connect with your environment. 
  • The Withdrawal of Senses focus on retracting one of the sensory experiences from the external objects.
  • Concentration focus on introspective focus and one-pointedness of mind
  • Meditation and Advanced Meditation

Yoga Practices For Wholistic Living

Wholistic living attempts and aim to strike a perfect equilibrium between mind and body. A healthy body has a competent mind that is capable of taking the decisions of life in an exemplary way without getting exhausted. 

Wholistic well-being is a harmony between the body, mind, and soul concerning the emotions and environment. Here are some practices of Yoga that contribute to wholistic living. 

Art of Breathing

It is the practice of the elimination of the impurities existing in the blood. Also, Pranayama intensifies the decision-making capability of the brain as the brain is provided with fresh air to serve at its full potential.


Meditation helps in removing any kind of mental agonies from the brain and keeping it fresh and calm. It also helps in reducing stress and anxiety. The practice of mediation guides us to remain calm and composed even in the times of stiffness.

Chanting of Mantras 

Mantras are a great source of knowledge and positivity. In fact, mantras are the root source of all spiritual knowledge. It offers emotional support in a tough time. Mantras teach us to encounter all kinds of ailments with audacity.

Yoga Positions

Yoga is ornamented with a lot of positions known as asanas that keep the body and mind fit. These Yoga positions or postures are perfect for calming of mind, assisting in building robust muscles, and curing numerous disorders like backache, asthma, diabetes, etc. Regular practice of Yoga helps the body to fight a lot of disorders.
